But what was the deal her father made? And can she really steal from the king’s right-hand man without falling for him?
Sadly, I only really got the hang of the story from the blurb. The first couple of chapters read, to me, like an extended blurb, and the rest of the book left me feeling out of my depth. I had a brief suspicion that this was a prequel that had been written mid-series, which would explain why the characters were not described at length, and why the main character spends the first two-thirds of the book not quite working out people’s expressions and the last third, working out much of what is unsaid via intimations and facial ticks, but I think I just didn’t get it. I couldn’t get used to the rhythm of the writing, although I did try, and the use of the cursed ‘off of’ nearly sent me running from my bed.
Not for me. Apologies.
paragraphs several times to try and understand what on earth was going on. The book could have been
so much better if there had been better explanations. I kept reading hoping things would be made clearer
but that didn't happen - or maybe it was just me?
I understood that Nim was in some magical contract to an evil society - the Trust - but didn't really get
how the Trust collected power from people buying magical favours, especially as the penalty for using magic
was death or imprisonment. As the King knew about the Trust, again I didn't understand why he didn't
get rid of them. Even the reveals at the end seemed unsatisfactory to me.
Sorry, not an author for me and I won't be reading the next installment. Shame, as the story line did have
potential. 2.5 stars.
Between Ink and Shadows has magic, politics, and secrets galore. The female main character defies societal norms, and the bad guy is seriously evil. Throw in the smart conversation, and we've got ourselves a good time on paper. I wanted to be entertained, and I was. That's a winner in my books!
