EXCERPT:

While waiting for James's tub to fill, Carlotta knelt at his feet and assisted him in removing his muddied boots.

"Never mind me," he said. "I daresay Mannington can manage. You'll need to remove the soot and mud from your own self."

She met his gaze and spoke throatily. "I wish to send Mannington away."

Now he understood. As exhausted as he was, he understood and his body feebly responded to the velvet tone of her seductive voice.

Mannington stepped from the dressing room with clean clothing for his master.

"I shan't need you any more tonight, Mannington," James said, his eyes never leaving Carlotta's.

"Very good, sir," the valet answered flatly as he set the clothing on James's bed then turned on his heel and departed.

With the firelight as a backdrop, James watched the footmen pour the last kettles of water into the tub, then leave the bed chamber.

Watching her husband with smoldering eyes, Carlotta reached for his buttons. James drew in his breath. She began to unfasten them, one by one. When she was finished, she lay her hand over the hair that matted on his chest. "So white there compared to here," she whispered as her hand reached to stroke his blackened face.

His breathing grew more harsh, his mind and heart shaken to their depths by her gentleness--and his ever-swelling love for her.

Slowly, she removed the shirt from him. "Shall we stand?" she whispered.

James answered her without words, pulling her up with him. Her hands slipped to the bare skin beneath his breeches, and she gave them a tug. "I shall require your assistance in removing these, my darling."

My darling? Good God in heaven! He was beginning to believe his wife had, indeed, fallen in love with him.

Carlotta Ennis has been living in Bath for the past six years since the death of her husband Stephen in the Peninsula wars. She had hoped to snare a husband enabling her to have someone to care for her and her son Stevie who at present was forced to live with her grandmother due to lack of finances. Carlotta had until recently been involved with Gregory Blankenship who had said from the outset that he would never offer marriage but Carlotta had foolishly thought to change his mind. Now with his parting gift a diamond necklace, he was gone and had married the young daughter of a Vicount.
James Moore had inherited the title Earl of Rutledge, he too had been a soldier in the Peninsula in fact it was through his conduct and disobeying orders that had caused the death of Carlotta's husband Stephen. James knew that she had a son and he determined that he was going to care for the boy it was the least he could do.
When he arrived in Bath James met Carlotta and was struck by her beauty, hostile towards him at first knowing his part in her husbands death, she refused to respond to him, but as time past they gradually came to be easier in each others company. Eventually James offered Carlotta Marriage, which she accepted. But she dreads him discovering her past.

Once again a very well written book by this author, the story is expressive and well told, you are immediately drawn into the lives of the characters. At first Carlotta comes across as a shallow and rather insipid woman she has always relied on her beauty to get her what she wants. James on the other hand is a very good man and apart from his involvement in his friends death he is most honourable. Although he does have a very idealistic outlook on life. It was very nice to read the change in the two leads as the story progressed Carlotta realising at last where her true responsibilities lie and behaving like the woman and mother she should be.

Having read the books out of order, this was the final book in this series for me. I didn't really fancy it because I disliked the main character, but I wanted to read about all the characters that I have come to know and love in this series. Carlotta was always made out to be an annoying, flirty, man-grabbing woman, and therefore the idea of her as a heroine didn't appeal to me. It therefore took me a while to get into this book, but when I did I really enjoyed it. Bolen skilfully writes the character of Carlotta as she matures into a loving wife, mother and all round better person. As her and James' love for one another grows, and Stevie finally has loving parents, this books rounds to a sweet conclusion that leaves the reader feeling satisfied and as though true love has once again won out.

Initially I wasn't looking forward to reading this book, as in the first two of the Brides of Bath series, Carlotta came across as a very unpleasant character; vain, shallow and totally selfish. Fortunately my obsession with reading series in order wouldn't let me leave this one out; this is my favourite of series. Opening with Carlotta in reduced circumstances, and mourning the loss of her relationship with Blanks, she still has much the same character of old. The joy of this book, is the skilful way Cheryl Bolen describes how once reunited with her son, Carlotta starts to put someone else first, finds her own self esteem and gradually turns her character around, to become the person James thinks she is. Nothing is forced, it is a gradual progression that develops from the plot, and this is a slightly darker book than the previous ones. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

This book has all the attributes needed in a romance. It deserves four and even five stars for the way it grasps the heart of the reader from the start. It was hard to put down which denotes a right rollicking love story.

I have now just finished The Bride's Secret, third in this series. Again it was really good read, as well as being completely different to the first two. I did wonder how this romance could progress with Carlotta being a 'fallen' woman, but yet again our author pulled something 'out of the hat'. I'm now looking forward to reading book 4, which unfortunately is also the last in series, ho hum.
