Having just spent four precious hours of my life steeped in the sordid world of professional barista-level coffee tampers, researching and analysing all aspects thereof in tedious depth and detail, I am seriously beginning to regret the day I chanced upon Mr James Hoffman’s ruinously excellent channel on the Tube of You. Until recently, I have managed to live my life blissfully free of the need for a precision-machined stainless steel tamper with seasoned olive wood top. The simple though admittedly ugly plastic tamper supplied with my DeLonghi has been making a perfectly acceptable job of compressing ground coffee into a compact disk since 2009. But since making the dreadful mistake of watching one of Hoffman’s manipulative mind-game videos extolling the virtues of these devices, and the meaningless of life without one, I became a man obsessed. My every waking hour was consumed by covetous thoughts about them. Worse, I have been suffering nights more disturbed than usual, with what scant sleep I enjoy interrupted by vivid dreams in which Hoffman himself is chasing me through a coffee plantation in the small hours, his Espro Calibrated Convex Base tamper glinting in the moonlighty night, berating me for my tamperless life and threatening to haunt me for evermore, causing me to wake violently in a cold sweat. Obviously, this unhealthy state of affairs could not continue, so as I am sure you have guessed already, I have capitulated and one of these now reposes seductively next to my espresso machine as I type these very words. Apart from the bizarre blue colour other's have bemoaned, it is, I think, a most excellently made instrument, and since it arrived I have used every opportunity to caress the curves of its smooth wood handle and feel the heft of its precision engineered stainless steel body while marvelling at the mirror finish of its perfectly flat base, and launch myself into a tamping frenzy!

A Must Have For All Delonghi Espresso Machines

For context, I have the Delonghi Dedica Style coffee machine. Since I bought it I used the plastic tamper/scoop that came with it and though it (just about) does the job, it’s really not that great.
So I found this one by the same brand (hoping that would avoid any size mismatches) and couldn’t be happier with it. It’s sturdy (got some weight to it), works smoothly even without applying lots of strength, and super easy to clean.

If like me you’ve been using that flimsy plastic one that came with your machine, give your hand a break and get this tamper.

This is our third de'longhi coffee machine and each one was supplied with the long plastic measure/tamper combined. This worked well and the machine produced a great cup of coffee with the amount of pressure I could apply.
Move on 3 years, a new quartz work top, a new ec685.bk machine as the .m model didn't go with the kitchen and me having trigger finger and arthritis. Need a tamper.
Looked at loads but decided on this de'longhi as is didn't want to order one that was the wrong size by a couple of mm. It arrived well packaged, looks well made and I combined the order with the tamping mat as I expected to put greater pressure onto the coffee and didn't want to damage the dispenser on the work top.
Having used it now for over a week I can honestly say it is so much easier to use and gets better pressure onto the coffee, than the one supplied. Especially if you have problems with your hands. I haven't seen a noticeable difference in the coffee dispensed, still very good.
Only negative is the colour. It has to be put away in the cupboard every time as it doesn't go with the kitchen. That's a problem with us and not the tamper.

I am a professionally trained baristo and I have wanted a proper tamper for ages.
I have a delonghi espresso machine and the plastic scoop/tamper combo it came with is ok, but this is a game changer!

It's heavy! I mean paperweight heavy! The main tamper is a solid piece of machined steel which unscrews from the wooden handle meaning you can chuck it in the dishwasher if you have one, no problem.

The FEEL! Oh my word! It's an ergonomic delight and fills you with confidence that you're tamping your coffee just right.

I swear I am getting a better crema since using it and the lovely solid puck of coffee which ends up in the knockout box is further evidence of the great job it does.

If you are still using a plastic tamper, do yourself a favour and get one of these. At under £17 for a really well made and well designed piece of equipment you won't regret it.

I was using the plastic one that came with the machine for many months and thought that it worked just fine, but a friend recently encouraged me to up my game if I’m making coffee every day, which I am, so this felt like an indulgence but it does make a difference. It is extremely well crafted and applies force more effectively.

I have a DeLonghi Dedica espresso machine that has a pressure cup of 58mm inside diameter. The supplied plastic spoon/tamper isn't adequate for tamping because it's too flimsy so have been looking for a more robust tamping tool for some time. I found plenty of smaller dia. tampers until I stumbled across this one.

It's a very well-made stainless steel tamper with wooden handle and it fits the pressure vessel exactly so is far easier to use than anything I've previously tried.

Pros:
- The metal part is heavy and sturdy. Surface is smooth to the touch but not extremely polished
- Handle is smooth and a decent shape.
- Good value, cheaper than most alternatives when I bought it

Cons:
- It isn't a tight fit with both of my filter baskets (~1-2mm gap). This hasn't led to any problems, but must be good for compatibility
- Personally not a big fan of how the blue wood looks

Bought this for the husband, he kept going on about it, I thought he was being pretentious wanting it, but bought it as a stocking filler for Christmas. Gotta say I flipping love it!! It makes compressing coffee into the filter so easy and with no mess. It’s a comfortable weight, feels very ergonomic and is easy to clean. Not sure about the price.. kinda feel it’s over priced, likely paying for the name more than anything else.

This was a vital addition to the coffee machine we bought, so much better than the plastic bit on the end of the measure that came with the machine. It would have been nice to have had this included with the machine but don't regret buying it.
Good heavy construction
My only gripe is that it's navy blue, not dark grey like my machine but It could have been me not checking the details when I ordered, it's not a problem though

Fits perfectly for filter with Dedica machine but suggest check size for other machines
Great item but not sure why the handle is blue when most Dedica machines are black and/or silver?
