1) Useful for small items
1) Expensive considering the quality of materials
2) Any filling thicker than 3mm will cause burning against the elements
3) Huge disappointment
4) Tony in Tenerife had a Breville Sandwich Maker!`
So for around, 6 years or more I waited patiently for our Aldi purchased toaster to give up the ghost. A week last Thursday, I was regretfully informed, that our toaster expired, doing what it loved to do: burn one side and not toast the other. I had lusted after a Dualit Toaster for 6 years, when I was about to buy one in Debenhams and my wife baulked at the price. This was the cheaper Lite version at around £85 at the time.
I snuck on to Amazon and found a Dualit Classic Vario 4 Slice model, reduced from £195 to £119.20 and without authorisation for the purchase I bought it. Whilst I eagerly awaited its arrival, I foolishly bought a sandwich toaster cage at the ridiculous price of £17.50. Now initially, given the full price of the toaster is nearly £200, in relative terms, the price ratio is OK. However, what turns up is essentially a very thin gauge piece of poorly chromed metal with a cheap looking hinge and even cheaper looking plastic handles.
I tried it out, and stupidly put the buttered side the wrong way round. The first attempt, which was offered to my wife came out ridiculously dry, however, that was my fault. The second attempt I trimmed the crusts, managed to put the buttered side facing the elements, put a slice of ham and a slice of Gouda and tried it out. It was pretty nice, certainly better than the cardboard one I served up to my wife previously.
Yesterday I tried again. I put butter on both sides of the bread and put one slice of ham and two slices of Gouda......that was the mistake, adding 2mm to the thickness of the sandwich caused untold problems. You can’t get the sandwich cage in without some man-handling. When you do get it in it the bread gets jammed up against the elements with the resultant nasty burning smell far worse than I have ever experienced before.
It took me 15 minutes to clear the bread fouling the toaster. Yes, it’s operator error, but putting two 2mm slices of cheese and 1 slice of ham of about1mm is hardly over-filling. So here I am, my wife is berating this £200 British toaster (yes I paid £119.20) and how crap the toaster cage is......She finally delivers the kick in the soft and curlies.....”Tony in Tenerife had a Breville Sandwich Maker and he made me breakfast and it was so nice....” (Tony was an ex-boyfriend of hers before I met and married her. I often take the p*** out of him because he lived with his mum, and now, I am devastated that this cheap and nasty overpriced gadget can’t match Tony Little K**b’s sandwich Maker. Thanks a lot Durash*t”
The seller accepted a return but insists that I must pay return postage, which I feel is unfair as it was their misleading description that led me to buy it.
When I tried to contact the seller to express my concerns, the message was reported by Amazon to be undeliverable due to a non-existent e-mail address for the seller.
The return label provided by the seller printed across three sheets of paper, splitting the barcode across two of them. After I managed to reformat the label so it printed on a single sheet of A4, the Post Office was unable to scan the barcode.
Come on Amazon, allowing companies like this to trade under your banner does you no favours at all. This seller must operate from a cupboard under the stairs; certainly quality control is unknown to them.
My only thing is that these are ridiculously pricey for what they are, the other style cages for the cheaper models are half the price............but once you get into the swing of having awesome cheese and ham toasties for lunch and not having to fish bits of bagel and crumpets out of the toaster, they're really worth every penny.
