I enjoyed this writer's previous crime series (DI Hilary Greene) and was interested to see if the new series would measure up. In fact, I found it to be better - it feels like the author has moved up a level. I downloaded and read the book in one sitting and found it to be very well-written. It's a good story - slightly reminiscent of Endeavour because of its setting (Oxford in the 60s), but in no way a copy - this follows the life of a WPC and shows some of the problems facing female police officers at that time, but it doesn't dwell on them. I like the idea of a partnership between a WPC and a coroner because it allows the writer to explore different threads of a criminal investigation. Looking forward to the next book in the series.

the book is everything the 1 star people said, one dimensional, riddled with errors, trite characterisation and for me, the worst sin of all, badly written. So many broken up sentences that don't follow on properly, the 'born in Essex, she works and lives in the south of England' type sentences, start off telling you one thing and make a sweeping diversion right after the comma. Seriously, if this is the author's writing style, how come more people haven't said they didn't like the earlier series too????

I'm ever looking for crime series to follow. On the basis of recent reads, I am left with very few authors who can entertain with quality writing, quality storylines and characters who come alive. I have to say so far no female writer has gotten onto my list. I am ever hopeful but they all let me down. Just like this one.

I have read all of the DI Greene books and really enjoy them so was really looking forward to this new series.
To say it is completely different is an understatement. Set in the 60's, a slower pace, no mobile phones, no internet, no DNA how did they ever
solve crimes? Good investigation and hard work are just two of the answers. New characters, a Coroner (with his own secrets) a young WPC
still learning the job, with a detective inspector who doesn't want a female officer and you have the start of a promising police procedural series well worth reading. I look forward to the next book.

Insanely Brilliant

This is so different from the previous series and an unusual change as based in the sixties. A WPC, a coroner, threatening letters and a murder. Trudy Loveday, the WPC, is just being used as a gofer by the DI in charge who definitely does not want any women in his team, so he allows her to with work with a thorough and stubborn coroner to aid in investigating a murder. However the coroner has another agenda having heard the murdered man's name at an inquest several years earlier. The patience and difficulty in finding out information comes across really well but Trudy finds that having spent a lot of her time on filing duties aids in some respects. The twist at the end is worth waiting for and I found this an enjoyable book.

1960's Detection

I grew up with 1960's policing which was all about keeping citizens safe on the streets and investigating reported crimes. Faith Martin captures the mood of the times well with an easy to read style without being fussy. Non of this selective policing and no perceptive acceptance of police wrong doing we have today! The novel is well written, the characters credible despite this being the first encounter of Ryder and Loveday and I'm sure the characters will develop as will the surrounding characters. The unmasking of the murderers is rather melodramatic and convoluted and perhaps belongs to an earlier era but OK.
One observation is that on page 15 putting tea leaves into the kettle rather than the the tea pot can only be an aberration unless citizens of Oxford used to brew their tea in this way??
I shall read more of Faith Martin's work because this book was so relaxing and with a well thought out plot expecting more of the same diligence and maturing in the writing and stories.
