In the 13th novel of the Hillary Greene series, she’s getting used to being a civilian consultant in the cold case team. For her second case, she has another murder to investigate. Rowan Thompson was stabbed to death with a pair of scissors while a student, staying in rented digs with four others and a landlady. While none of them have watertight alibis, neither do any of them have sufficient motive to want to kill the young student.

Hillary’s investigation turns up nothing new, but this is no longer her main concern. Her stalker is growing bolder and more aggressive, despite her attempts to identify him. His presents now contain clues, leading Hillary to discover the identity of three women who have all gone missing.

And as her love life improves, her stalker is not amused.

These consistently entertaining and absorbing novels not only contain a murder mystery to solve, but the backstory always presents challenges and conflicts to deal with, whether it’s the death of colleagues or a stalker. This adds to the depth of interest and enjoyment, making this series compulsive.

I'm a big fan of the Hillary Greene series. This is only the second of almost two dozen books from Faith Martin where I could only give it a 4* review. The police procedural element was as skillfully handled as ever. The unsolved cold case wasn't going to remain a mystery once Hillary was handed the files. The whole stalker story that ran throughout the book felt wrong. Are our police really that poor at spotting psychopaths? I know hiding in plain sight is a well-known ploy, but something should have raised suspicions - before he even got to the interview stage. As for the ruse proposed by Hillary's boss - that they cozy up to one another to make the stalker mad enough to break cover, well... It's impossible to get the police to attend a major incident without a risk assessment - her boss's plan had risks with a capital R. As for the abrupt ending and the need to read the next book to unmask the culprit, that's so lame. Almost every series in every genre features that marketing gimmick - and it stinks. Ah well, this wasn't one of the best but I'll keep the Faith and be back for more.

These are excellent books and although they can stand alone I would strongly advise you to read them in order as there are threads that run through them. I only started this series a short while ago but got booked and this last book ended on a cliff hanger. Eagerly awaiting the next episode.

After reading several excellent reviews on this book, I decided to buy the Kindle version (where usually I buy paper backs). Even though it is part of a series with a recurring character, DI Hillary Greene, it can be read as a stand alone. I found the plot believable enough, and the pacing really good. I liked all the characters, and found myself engaged in their lives. Rather craftily, the ending leaves the reader hanging, and clambering to get the next book in the series to find out what happens next. Surprisingly, I actually felt a little cheated by that. But the one thing that irritated me throughout the book, and often made me want to put it down (I didn’t though, but I DID skim a lot) was the terrible editing. The narrative simply didn’t flow in many places, and I found several paragraphs where sentences had been repeated. Far too many unnecessary adverbs just made some of the writing ‘clunky’ and more than a little cheesy. It’s not a long book, but it would have ended up as a novella with some proper editing.

An excellent detection story, with suspects aplenty, many dead end leads followed, and lots of good back room policing undertaken, until all is revealed in a masterly police.interview conducted by ex-DI Hillary Greene at the end of the cold case.
Running concurrently through the book is the threat to Hillary from an "admirer" (a dangerous stalker). This adds spice to an already good story.
