SOLVING THE MYSTERY OF THE MYSTERY

How do you write a cozy murder mystery that readers will love? You need to include all of the things they expect to find in their favourite genre:

- A murderer and a victim
- An investigator - either a Great Detective in the tradition of Sherlock Holmes; a Spinster Sleuth like Miss Marple; or a feisty amateur sleuth for a Modern Cozy Mystery.
- A closed setting with a small circle of suspects
- A 'Watson' to assist (or hamper!) the sleuth
- An investigation that explores Means, Motive, Opportunity and Alibis
- Clues to what really happened and red herrings that muddy the waters
- A plot that puts all of these things together in the proper sequence

Here you will find techniques and tools for creating all of these ingredients, along with detailed breakdowns of the three plot structures most often used for whodunits: the Act I Murder, the Midpoint Murder, and the Most-Likely Suspect (or Innocent Accused) story.

As a British Crime Author, I'm always looking to enhance my writing. I have spent thousands of dollars buying virtually every book there is to help me improve my skills. This book is very comprehensive and covers far more than I had expected. It includes tons of real examples and is extremely well written. The knowledge of the author is incredible. So much so that I have just purchased the five other books he has published in this series. For any writer, from newbie to more established (I've published four novels), I cannot recommend this book highly enough. This has to be in the top 3 of the 277 books I currently own on the subject. Five stars are not enough.

I recommend this work, because it fulfils its promise of How To. We are shown all the facets of constructing a mystery, as a study of Table of Contents indicates. Useful comments on Personalities of Suspects. Fascinating history of Traditional Cozies. Surprise ending: writer included step by step outline of his own C.M. including commentary. Bibliography shows extent of research. Oh, yes. I recommend.

This is one of the absolute best books on how to write mysteries that I’ve read, and I’ve read a ton. Such clear presentation and thorough in its content. It has already been a wealth of information. I’m a student of the craft and just getting going, and I wish I had found this book sooner. Thank you to the author, Paul Tomlinson, for all the obvious effort in writing and sharing this book. I highly recommend.
