Right from the moment of opening the package and playing with the pedals while still on the card I was impressed. Not usually a word you associate with bicycle pedals!
As I rotated the axles between my fingers I noticed the drag - not of overtightened bearings but of bearings that have been well-packed with grease for a longer life. Absolutely no play or roughness detected.
The second thing I noticed was that - unlike most - it's a proper hex nut to tighten the pedals onto the crank arms. If you've ever cursed at the awkwardness of getting a spanner onto the usual two flats you'll definitely appreciate this.
The pedal cages and bodies are also well finished, no rough edges, paint runs, etc. This doesn't affect how they work but it does give you an indication that the manufacturer has probably taken the same care in the rest of the production process.
You can just make out a red bead around the cage-to-body mount at teh top left of the pedal in the photo - this is locking compound to ensure that those don't come apart as you ride along.
Old pedals removed, a quick smear of grease on the mounting threads and a quick run up and down the road to test. They feel good and this design fits into the treads of my usual cycling footwear (lightweight hiking boots - I value my ankles.) Again, no roughness or play felt while riding and my feet felt a lot more attached than they did on the plain flat pedals that these replaced.
Once I got back I rotated the pedals by hand again - they already feel a little more free to move. in the sense of the grease being more evenly spread out, not of something coming loose that is.
Pricey compared to some but money well-spent!
Would I buy these again? Damn right I would!
