My initial thoughts were my god this is noisy, the wheel motors are very loud, the beater makes an awful noise, and every time it bumps into something (which is all the time) a loud click, the previous robot was a good 15db quieter according to my meter.
I’m already having buyers regret of investing in a brand new model, but as I wanted the mapping as needed no go areas and zones, which my other one did not support, I’m sticking with it. So 65 minutes later the robot decided it needed to come back to charge, it got stuck and couldn’t get on the base; I realise I’ve put the base too close to a side cabinet, but I gave it a helpful nudge on, I can see a map of where it’s cleaned and it looks good, but when I go to the map section of the app, strangely there is no map.
Of course I now need to move the base, and with that comes the realisation I will have to recreate the map as it can’t simply recalibrate (no idea why not when the competition can). So into a new room, against an empty wall on the centre.
After charging it up, I started the robot, it moved forward, then moves a tiny bit around the room before telling me it doesn’t know where it is and stops. I put it back on the base to try again. Once again it moved forward and then just sits there, eventually saying the same message. I'm guessing that the robot must think it’s in the previous room, although there is no map saved, I started some troubleshooting and reset the robot, deleted it from the app and re-paired it etc.
Next attempt, same problem. Next stop, I contacted Neato tech support, go through all the steps (which I'd already done), same problem, eventually I was told to let it come out then when sits there, press pause then resume on the app, this seemed to work and by magic off it went.
Now we are onto to its third proper run, unbelievably it got stuck, haven driven into a solid wall, by this time battery was down to 40% so I ended up putting it on the base, to charge up and try again. 4th attempt it got into a different room and then decided it didn’t know where it was, again by this time it’s been running almost an hr, so back to square one.
5th attempt (remembering all the time, I have to let it come off the base, then press pause and then resume otherwise it doesn’t know where it is and sits there). It goes through every room, battery runs low so off it goes to the charger base, except it stops on its way and says it doesn’t know it’s way..
6th attempt, it makes it back to the room where the base is, drives past it several times, drives into it 5 times, then promptly drives past it, into a wall 4ft away and just sits there saying returning to base.
I've spoken with Neato tech support several times throughout this, they are great, really empathetic and understanding, although I was shocked to learn they have had a lot of similar calls, and then thanked me for my patience, and told me they will be sending out updates to the app and to the robot to improve this. I'm not sure what I am meant to do in the meantime as it doesn't work! Anyway, I left it over night to try again in the morning, by this time, I have spent the best part of 7hrs trying to get this thing to work and to be fair I have lost all faith in it, especially as you can imagine, I’ve spent 7 x times the price and appear to have an expensive door stop at. Aside from the noise and cheap materials, I’m honestly at a loss as to how a brand new product and model can perform so poorly.
Anyway after it had charged up overnight, I set it off this morning to create a map, it came away from its base and started cleaning. 2 mins later it stopped cleaning, drove around with no vacuum then said it had completed cleaning and promptly docked itself to the wall next to the dock before saying something is wrong.
Every attempt to restart it is the same as described above, it comes away from the dock and then just sits there before deciding it doesn’t know where it is and despite having driven straight of the dock, it can’t find its way back.
It’s clear to me this product simply fails to be a robot vacuum. Suffice to say I shall be returning it today (thank god for Amazon return policies) and going to the competitors.

So when I bought the D8 I was looking forward to a machine which would be better than my ageing Neato (i.e.an upgrade).
I am however so disappointed - the navigation was just terrible - for life of me I cannot understand how can a company make a more expensive and premium product which underperforms their own 5 year old product.
Some of the issues I faced - was really hesitant to move in our open plan kitchen with white porcelain tiles such that it ran out of battery after 2 hours before it could complete cleaning, got into bathroom with a threshold at entry and then refused to come out, had to baby sit it as it got itself into tight spot and couldn't as much simple reverse out in a few places, failed to find its base station which was about 3 feet away from where it gave up, bumps into objects repeatedly - usually 3 times (older neato after 1 bump remembers). neato cust service is usually quite good and I can probably spend time with technical help to figure out if there is something I can do to resolve some of the issues, but I don't see the point of investing so much time and effort after paying a premium price.
Many of this issues I hope can be fixed with future software upgrades but for now even though I really wanted to like this product, I have requested a return.

After using this for a couple of weeks I've decided to return it and look for another from a manufacturer who respects its customers. Charging more for a robot that does less than its predecessor is frankly a kick in the face to customers and the only option I have is to speak with my wallet and return it.
It does not respect the no go zones, so it is often getting stuck under the TV units and scratching itself up.
The physical magnetic strips that came with the D7 to stop it going where you don't want also don't work with the D8, so you can't use that as a fallback.
It is way too noisy, even when the suction is turned off while it's navigating back home.
There is no option to even be reminded after a certain amount of run time to empty the bin, because of this the bin got too full and clogged up the machine.
When I spoke to support about this, they simply told me I have to just check after every clean. The cheaper D7 has an option in the old app to remind me after 30 minutes of run time, which is better but I expect a new robot to have some sort of sensor to tell me when to empty it, especially since the new robot is more expensive than the D7. Support told me none of the new robots have reminders to empty the bin, not even the extortionate D10. Shocking.
Speaking of support, despite me telling them I have a D8 they continued to show me screenshots of the old app, despite the D8 only working with the new inferior MyNeato app.
It regularly also gets stuck on a step which leads to the kitchen despite having drop sensors, and I have to manually pick it up to get it going again.
Finally, I find it ridiculous that I can't even turn off the bleep-bloop sounds or voice on the robot. It's loud enough without needing obnoxious bleeps whenever it starts or ends. Again, the D7 and old app have an option to disable sounds which just doesn't exist in the new app.
They're selling a worse product for more money, and I just don't find it acceptable. Trying to sell a product with less features for more money because it has a nicer design is a fool's errand and I am sad to see a once great, innovative company go the way of so many others and rip off customers for some extra revenue.
Original review:
I've been hestitant to upgrade to anything newer than a D7 because Neato have hiked the prices. The D8, despite being more expensive than the D7 and a higher number, is actually less capable than the D7.
For example, the D7 has no go LINES while the D8 only has no go ZONES. Lines can be put anywhere, at any angle, but zones must be a box shape. The box shape means that if you have a weird angle to try and block off (like a TV unit at a 45 degree angle), then the zone must encompass the whole thing, which leaves part of the TV area unvacuumed. That isn't an issue with the D7 because it can handle no go LINES at any angle, so you can just draw a 45 degree line in front of the TV unit and it will clean right up to it.
The D7 has zone cleaning (meaning you can tell it to clean a specific room or area of a room), the D8 can't do this and just has to clean the whole area it's based in.
The D7 has other features like gentle navigation on/off, which just doesn't exist as an option for the D8. I can't even find a way to turn off sounds on the D8.
The D7 and D8 have the same size bin (despite their marketing trying to make it sound like it's bigger), but inexplicably to remove the D8's bin you have to take off the top cover which spans the entire width of the robot, which means that when emptying it, it's much harder to lower it into a plastic bag etc to cleanly empty it without dust going everywhere. With the D7, it's a much smaller cover when removing it which makes it easier to fit into the kitchen bin.
The D8 has a smaller battery, seems to be slower in actually completing the job and is generally just very noisy navigating. The wheels seems to squeak as it moves around.
I also don't like the fact that it's a completely separate app and now the old app is no longer updated by Neato, despite the D7 being a better option.
Generally, I think the D8 is way overpriced. It feels like a last ditch attempt for the company to make some money due to investor pressure. If you watch the D8/9/10 announcement from 2020 you'll see the Neato rep struggle to explain what makes the new models different from the previous models other than just the design, which is not an excuse to hike the price. Considering the D10 is likely the real replacement for the D7, you're looking at close to £1000 for the D10 compared to around £400-£500 for the D7.
On a positive note, the D8 does still do a better job of navigating than any Roomba since it cleans the edges first like the D7, and it seems to pick up dirt about as much as the D7, but I miss a lot of the D7's features and regret not just buying the cheaper one. I just hope that the old app continues to work because it is superior in many ways.

It maps the floor space which is a good feature, but then when you try to use it again it's lost it map so you have to start all over again , doesn't go over certain thresholds in door ways in my home , and considering it has drop sensors it's nearly committed suicide twice by not stopping at the top of my stairs totally useless.

Cons - App glitched a few times especially when using chat and go back in. Did not run every single corner in the room I guess if you have a funny shaped room or corners you will have to pick up and robot and drop it where you need cleaning.
Overall pleased with the result considering it is a mid range product.
