Good follow-up to Captive Prince; so I'm told.

4,0 van 5 sterren Well written, but not really erotica...
Beoordeeld in de Verenigde Staten op 24 april 2017
Geverifieerde aankoop
I do not know why this series is called erotica, is it just because it is m/m because that does not automatically make a book erotica! Erotica is meant to titillate, excite, and be sexy AF! While I do think Damen and Laurant have chemistry, so much of the book is just as I described in Captive Prince - two fighters circling each other trash talking but still very hands off. And then lots of riding to new villages/castles, chasing down the enemy, politics, battles, backstabbing...all of which is action-filled but its very minimal on "erotica" or romance.

But Chapter 19, oh Chapter 19, you earned this book its extra star. When she does write romance and sex, she writes it well, just wish there was a little more of their love story and fewer power plays. Its a bit like Game of Thrones minus the dragons and all the sex, which is really just our heroes playing an elaborate chess game to win the Iron Throne.

4,0 van 5 sterren Great Middle Book of Trilogy

Damen and Laurent lead a rather rag-tag group of soldiers towards the border, where they know Laurent's uncle the Regent has something in store to get rid of the troublesome prince. As their fate draws nearer, the two men gain a new respect for each other, and their feelings for each seem to be harder and harder to contain.

“Prince’s Gambit” continues the same intricate plot of the first book, Captive Prince. There are even more twists and turns along the way, but without revealing too much it's fair to say it feels like the pieces are all in place by the end of this installment. Yet, with all the damned-if-you-do, damned-if-you-don't choices laid before them, it's impossible to be sure just how the story will play out for our two protagonists in the final installment.

Just as the plot become more complex, so do the characters. Laurent in particular becomes less of a one-dimensional sadistic bastard. We begin to understand some of what made him the way he is and what the end game may be. However, some of the big surprises come from the group of men around Laurent and Damen. Chances are you'll have at least one “wow I didn't see that coming” moment reading this installment.

This is definitely an intriguing series. Although like most reviews I've classified it as fantasy, that's really only because the story is set in cultural milieu that never existed. There is no magic or mythical beasts, and the characters are decidedly human without any super powers. Without the imaginary setting you might well describe this as a mystery or psychological thriller.

4,0 van 5 sterren Battles of the sword and heart
Beoordeeld in de Verenigde Staten op 3 september 2016

After the events of Captive Prince, things become much more cutthroat for Damen and Prince Laurent. Battles, betrayals, losses, and heartache are hard realities they must face together. Nothing will be easy and everything comes with a price.

I’m not sure where to begin with Prince’s Gambit. It’s a difficult book to sit down and talk (or type) about while making sense. The story feels different than compared to Captive Prince and it’s a good thing. I enjoyed reading about the various battles and strategies, and so forth. The characters, especially Damen and Laurent, grew into more than what they were in book one. They really opened their eyes to things they were blind to before and took it upon themselves to change. That said, I’m impressed with Laurent’s character growth. He, while not completely, redeems himself a little for what he’s done and had been like prior to these events. To put that plainly, he’s more likeable this time around.

The content is a lot less shocking (that kind of stuff is toned down) than it was in book one. And things are still very slow burn when it comes to Damen and Laurent. The ending was exciting, but I am so upset with something, two somethings, that happened. I almost cried. Moving on to book three.

4,0 van 5 sterren Questionable Romance
Beoordeeld in de Verenigde Staten op 3 maart 2016

There should really be an explicit content/trigger warning on this book, as it contains rape, pedophilia and slave/master relationships. These books could also be considered problematic in terms race and colorism. If these are triggering issues for you, I would NOT recommend reading this series. I feel like these issues in the context of the book however, were handled well and well written. It is uncomfortable reading these parts as it should and is meant to be.

I have to say that these books are hard to put down and I am glad that I ordered all three at the same time. Having read the series, I think that characters were very likable, interesting and had their own depth. The romance was a little hard to buy, and I could only chalk it up to Stockholm Syndrome considering the personalities of the two main characters and their backgrounds. It just didn't click for me. The sex scenes in this series were better written than most romance novels I've read. I usually skip over these scenes since the writing is usually so ridiculous or horrid, but the scenes flow well and feel appropriately timed.

Overall the writing was fantastic! I've given this series 4 stars, on the premise that the romance was hard to believe and considering the book's genre it could use some work. The story itself and the characters are fantastic. I can't wait to see more work from Pascat.

4,0 van 5 sterren Probably the Best One
Beoordeeld in de Verenigde Staten op 14 augustus 2016

Probably my favorite book of the series. The first one was a little slow, the third was all over the place, but this one manages to capture the sense of travel and the passage of time with surprising ease. The simplicity of the prose grows on you after a while.

More than anything, the interactions are fantastic. Some of the best I've read. You get to witness the characters get into short, natural conversations, some of which are just a few sentences before they go on their way. Get distracted or interrupted, as you would in life. You watch interactions between side-characters as you might expect to witness in reality. A glimpse, an observation, but not too much focus. It's clear that everyone shown continues to exist and grow even when they aren't on screen. It's very organic. Laurent and Damen are delightful, and the little adventures they manage to go on had me grinning despite myself. Lots of ups and downs, levity and abject horror alike.

Of all of the books, I'd reread this one. There's just a lot to like.

4,0 van 5 sterren I liked this book more than the first one
Beoordeeld in de Verenigde Staten op 8 november 2016
Geverifieerde aankoop
I liked this book more than the first one, because it provides more of an insight into the characters and world. Especially Laurent. I feel like this is really the first time you get to know him, not just the perception of his character.

As I mentioned, I bought and started the second book minutes after finishing the first one. I just couldn’t let go! This story is so utterly addictive to me.

This novel has more political intrigue and scheming, which I always enjoy in a novel. You get to see more of the world than just the capital of Vere. You get to read about small villages, castles at the border, different kingdoms and even female tribes. It’s so intriguing!

This is where I started liking Laurent more. Not that anything really excuses what he did in the first book, but you get more of a glimpse into his character.

Just like with the first book, I finished this one and immediately purchased and started book #3.

4,0 van 5 sterren Characters Hook You
Beoordeeld in de Verenigde Staten op 3 oktober 2018
Geverifieerde aankoop
I am not going to try and tell you these books are, you know, great works of literature. The world building is kind of thin. The plot isn’t all that unique. BUT the two main characters will hook you if you let them. About halfway through the first book I knew I was going to have to read until the end of the trilogy to see how these two work it all out.

People might hate me for this, but the appeal reminded me of the “Twilight” books because attachment to the characters and investment in their relationship is what sells the story.

And that’s fine. Every book doesn’t have to be “Madame Bovary.” I thoroughly enjoyed my time with these fictional people, and that is worth the price of admission.

4,0 van 5 sterren Solid sequel
Beoordeeld in de Verenigde Staten op 12 mei 2019
Geverifieerde aankoop
I've left a more detailed review for the third book, but as far as sequels/middle-of-a-trilogy books go, this was solid and didn't feel like a filler at all. Developed and built upon what we know from the first book, and set up for the third without it feeling like a set up for a third book. The price hike on the sequel bugs me, but obviously whoever decided that knew it would be effective and people would buy it even so.

4,0 van 5 sterren Well written.

A well written book, though at times it seemed incongruous. There was also a rather large section with more talk of cocks than the plot. If anything, it seemed like Cassandra Clare's obsession with romance, but on a smuttier scale.

If you make it past all the talk of cocks, and the slow burning romance that is the center of the novels. [I'm a fan of the romance, not so much the abundance of sex], the plot is always thickening, and makes out to be a riveting read! Looking forward to starting 'Kings Rising'.
