I've read all the Hillary Green series as they've been re-released. I think I've become so familiar with Faith Martin's writing that I clocked the solution to this murder about halfway through the book, long before Hillary got there. However, these books are not just about the murders she solves but also about her life and the lives of those around her. Now that she's come back to help as a consultant, there are new characters introduced because her old team have all gone elsewhere; in any case, now no longer a DI, she doesn't have a team in the same way but she still has the old, familiar set-up of a right-hand man, a young trainee and another who doesn't really like her. Will Hillary win through with Vivienne as the books go on, I wonder? She still has Superintendant Donleavy, who was determined to get her back after she retired from the force; a retirement brought on by her desire to save the force from embarrassment after helping her one-time sergeant who shot the man who killed her husband. Enter also a possible future love interest, Steven Crayle and another, even more dangerous element, which will be carried over to the next book. Great stuff!

After retiring and travelling the canals for 18 months, Hillary Greene returns to act as a civilian consultant in the Crime Review Team. She’s handed an unsolved murder from 20 years ago and sets about reopening the investigation, ably assisted by a former police sergeant.

It’s not the action packed, rough and tumble she’s used to. And being a civilian, she doesn’t have the powers she once had. But she doesn’t let it affect her as she sets about examining the evidence and interviewing witnesses once more. It’s slow progress, tarnished only by evidence that she has an admirer, who is fast becoming a stalker.

As with all the previous novels in the series, this latest novel has all the sharp characters, conflict and humour that makes the series memorable. There are plenty of references to key moments in the past and some sharp observational humour to underpin the main story. Hillary may be a little rusty, but she soon hits her stride to find the details missed in the original investigation and identify the killer.

The series never disappoints and this novel is no exception, taking Hillary into new, but familiar territory.

Retirement was never going to sit well with Hillary Greene. She's back with new colleagues and a boss who makes her heart beat that little faster. The references to her past are given a brief mention and then it's swept away to be replaced with a blank canvas for the writer to explore. As this cold case is examined by Hillary we are introduced to her new team. The police procedural genre has its peculiar details and pace. The interviews and office conversations with and about the various suspects peel back the layers of the onion until the unrivalled expert gets that bead of inspiration that unlocks the case. As with all the books in the series this is well-written, easy to read and has that lingering question about what will happen next. The case is closed, but a danger still exists. I'm left with no option but to read the next book for further developments.

Hillary is now a retired DI - difficult as that is to believe - and is now working as a consultant on cold cases. With a handsome, sexy boss and interesting colleagues. Naturally, she solves her first case fast enough for someone to scoop the pot on the book running as to if/when she solves it. But she’s also picked up a stalker, and it doesn’t take much reading between the lines to know that he is a thoroughly dangerous individual. Literally can’t wait for the next one and luckily I don’t have to! Onwards.

Faith Martin never ceases to amaze me with her writing on gripping crime mysteries. Brilliant story that will have you on the edge of your seat. So happy to see Hillary Greene back on the job and catching criminals. How many cold cases will she manage to solve?
Do I sense romance in the air between Hillary and Stephen----her new boss? Can't wait to read Book 13 to find out.
Well earned 5 stars.
