Rather Be the Devil: From the Iconic #1 Bestselling Writer of Channel 4’s MURDER ISLAND (Inspector Rebus 21) (English Edition) Kindle-editie
satisfying twists I felt I might have whiplash."--Tampa Bay Times
"[A] finely crafted new entry...[Rankin] is as tireless in delivering the goods as his creation is in solving tough cases."
"As always, Rankin delivers some fascinating procedural details, but the heart of the book--and its main appeal to crime-fiction readers--lies in the evolving personal relationships between the three cops and one bad guy. The switching of roles between Rebus and Clark continues to intrigue, but even better is the transformation of Fox from a behind-the-scenes guy...into a real cop working the mean streets." --Booklist
--The Seattle Review of Books
"It is sensational...this story truly sings." --Vick Mickunas, Dayton Daily News
"It's always intriguing to follow Rebus around the city and country he loves, and for those who have followed his long career the pleasures are even richer." --Michele Ross, The Cleveland Plain Dealer
"One of the best things in crime fiction for years, but Rankin kicks it up several notches here." --Booklist (Starred Review)
"Rankin is a past master of atmospheric, dark crime fiction, and in Even Dogs in the Wild, his 31st book, he's in top form."--Collette Bancroft, Tampa Bay Times
"Rankin is an expert at manipulating multiple plots...Along with his plotting prowess, Rankin has cultivated a fluid style that accommodates mordant cop talk, coarse gangster lingo and the occasional honest expression of compassion."
--Marilyn Stasio, New York Times Book Review
"Rankin's procedurals are strong, well-constructed, page-turning mysteries, and his latest is no exception."
--San Francisco Chronicle
"This may be the author's 21st series outing, but the thrill is still fresh."
"With its trademark blend of sharp wit and even sharper police work, this entry is yet another example of why Rankin remains in the top echelon of Scottish crime writers."
A "twisty, darkly topical, and immaculately executed tale of Edinburgh's underbelly." --The Guardian

Rankin continues to groom Malcolm Fox to take over in the irascible detective role but, since this book sees a resurgence in the fortunes of Rebus' long term adversary Big Ger Cafferty, I doubt we've seen the last of the old cop just yet.
However the start of the book had me worrying my friend may never return, or simply not be himself any more. It was a slow worrying start but a great reflection on life as we all age gracefully or otherwise alongside Rebus - none of us are getting any younger.
I love how this old rogue just can't give up even in reitrement and has a new lease of life when a former colleague is found murdered.
Add a sprinkling of Siobhan, Fox, Big Ger and Christie and you have a book you can't put down.
Two plots twist and turn and finally come together for a great finale.
Welcome back Rebus, I don't see how you'll ever put your feet up now!
Rather Be the Devil is more of the same: a tight plot that you’re forced to follow because it surprises you on every page; familiar characters behaving how you would expect (but not in every scene, thankfully); and a story that manages to have the not so recent history and recent history running parallel. Rankin is a top class writer with a great deal of experience in this genre. It shows.
