Short and mostly composed of filler about WW2 RAF bomber crews

I read the three earlier books in this series. The first was entertaining and promising. It had a pleasant setting and established a few likeable characters. The second not too bad. Downhill since then. This book has very little plot. It feels as though the author knew she didn't have a story so she filled the book with stuff about RAF bomber crews. The novel is very short and ends without reaching any real conclusion. These later books feel as if the author has exhausted her imagination but doesn't want to stop writing. The portions of the last couple of stories that are in the original village setting are very repetitive. She keeps wheeling out the same few traits to describe the secondary characters (including the cat), in a way that just seems lazy. It means that if you have read the earlier ones you find yourself hearing the same things all over again.

An intriguing mystery that may or may not be a murder? The Colonel, on an extended visit to a friend, discovers a body floating in a pond. 'Did he fall or was he pushed', that is the question? The story has a rather long introduction - five chapters! My favourite character is the lady at the Tudor re-enactment gathering. A good chuckle. Persevere, it is worth it. More questions than answers!

Quite disturbing. Unnecessary slight on our very brave bomber pilots. I don't think young adults of today could do what they did. I have the feeling that our lost young men would be asking themselves if it was worth their sacrifice. Sorry, I don't want to offend anyone but I found it most distasteful and quite unnecessary.

I had largely enjoyed the preceding stories about the Colonel. This one was a disappointment. It was more like a Mrs Dale's Diary recounting of her daily trivia combined with a failed fundraising leaflet for the Bomber Command memorial. There was no satisfactory conclusion; the reader is genuinely left to decide for themselves! It was almost as though the author had run in to a wall.
The final irritation was to reach 89% read (according to the Kindle count) and find the book finished! The reamaining 11% is taken up with blurb and puffs for other books.

I have now read books 1,2,3,4, have purchased no5. Thought books 1 and 2 were very good 5 star reading, book 3 only 3 stars , felt it ended to quickly and felt the author was tiring. Book 4 only 2 stars again ending to quickly more like a novelette, kept repeating the same
story about the airmen over and over felt that it was just to fill space, I have no doubt about the Bravery of the Bomber Crews whatsoever
but felt this was a story that did nothing for those crews, or indeed anything else. I hope book 5 is an improvement and not worse.

I've enjoyed all the books by this author until this one. It feels unfinished, like the author didn't know how to end it. The colonel is an interesting character and very likeable and the other books have clearly described him pretty much solving the murders single handedly and identifying the perpetrator. In this book the death of the mid turret gunner is up in the air (see what I did there?), with only guesses and innuendos by various characters. It left me dissatisfied. It's also extremely short at just 143 pages which I read in a few hours. Maybe there's a sequel with the answer???

I hate novels that rush around tidying everything neatly away in the last two chapters. It always feels unfinished, somehow as though the story hadn't been properly thought out.
But Mayhew never does that. And this time she excelled herself with a steady, well paced, Ravel's Bolero of a story. It builds slowly, mounting, holding your interest ...... then rewards you with a jarring, crashing, crescendo. Then, just when you thought it was all over ......

I don't know what happened to the author but this book really was a huge let down. I gave up half way through as I got so fed up with repititions from the other and much better books in the series. They were word for word which was annoying. Also the storyline was bizarre and frustrating. It has put me off reading other books written by this author. Shame.

Book 4 in this engrossing series with the Colonel once again involved in a mystery. A rather different type of story this time with a military reunion to which the colonel has been invited only to become involved in the whereabouts of the seventh member of the team. Good stories and good writing - a series worth acquiring. Highly recommended.

I've enjoyed the first few books in this series, but this one is one I found most tedious. If you're interested in the RAF during the 2nd world war, this is one for you. About 50% of the book is covering the history of RAF bombers and crew, the rest of the book was just a backdrop for all the historical facts. Totally boring
