Saved the threads but took a few attempts

I drilled and tapped using the provided tools being very careful and using cutting oil. Threads looked pretty clean and even but when it was time to add the insert the would bind and break before sitting where I wanted them to.

Took a few attempts where I had to remove the inserts with pliers and even have to run the tap a few times to clean the new threads again until I finally got it go go all the way in.

Giving a 4 star as not sure if it was user error or just not the best quality but at the end of the day, it did save my bacon restoring the thread on a valve cover.

I used it to repair a stripped royal Enfield footrest bracket (very soft monkey metal alloy). The drill bit and tap were perfectly sharp enough and accurate and cut a nice clean thread. However the first helicoil decided to go in skipping every other thread, of course the bolt wouldn't then go in. Managed to get it out by using the drill, it sort of chewed up the insert and poked enough out for me to grab with pliers.

Second one also did some very strange stuff.
Third time lucky and with a very mashed thread it went in and the bolt has held very well, even in to soft aluminium mashed by my ham-fistedness

I've just used this today to fix a stripped injector bolt hole in a diesel. The engine casing and thread is aluminium - and after an injector replacement and a leaking seal fix the engine decided it didn't want a thread anymore after it started up! I took the bolt out and no thread was left... I used the included drill bit and lots of oil, cut myself a new hole to the correct depth. I then cut the thread using lots of oil, clearing up as you go. Make sure you follow the instructions. Cut the thread to the required depth, then I inserted not one, but two helicoil inserts stacked to better match the original thread. 3D (3xdepth) helicoil would have been better, but two of the included low depth ones was perfect.

Be warned, once the helicoil goes in it expands and it WILL NOT rewind! I torqued the injector clamp up to 25nm and started up - no leaking! I've not drove it yet but I'm sure it will be fine. Perfect, saved myself a fortune and a massive amount of time. A great set of tools which will easily pay for itself after one use. The only negative is the slightly short coils included and the fact that no where can you find info on how long they are when inserted.

Excellent! Got me out of trouble

Bought to repair a crossed tread on a VW Golf rear shock mount. Fairly easy to do, my first experience drilling out and tapping a thread (as a competent DIY mechanic).

The drill will likely kick back a couple of times, with experience you get the knack, just the right amount of speed and pressure. Same goes for tapping the thread.

Inserting the Helicoil was the easiest bit - it winds straight in, then just knock out the ‘tang’.

Managed to torque the bolt up to “one good ugga”, knocking noise gone, job’s a good’n.

The Helicoil does not move once wound in, the original bolt goes in even easier as the thread is nice and clean.

£20 is surely cheaper than a garage/body shop would have been!

Heli-coil inserts are an industry standard method for repairing threads in aluminium and cast iron.

This particular kit is neatly presented in a compartmented tin box, and includes everything needed to complete the repair of a stripped thread. If you need more, then spare inserts are available separately once you have used up the 25 that come with the kit.

The kit comes with clear instructions but no handle for the tap. Not really a criticism since nails don't come with hammers and it keeps the price reasonable. Tap handles don't cost much and you'll only need one for all the other tap sizes available.

For the price of ten minutes of a mechanic's time; I was able to repair a couple of threads stripped out when a ham fisted mechanic (at a main dealer prices) removed the belly plate under the engine for a service. He must have driven the hardened steel machine screws back in with a power tool and the soft aluminium of the suspension sub frame stripped out.

I didn't find out until I removed the belly plate for the next oil change I couldn't put it back! This would have been a nightmare to repair any other way - the parts alone would have cost hundreds!

If you only use this kit once, you will get your money back.
