If I could give this zero stars I think I would. Fortunately, when you hover over the first star Amazon suggests "I hate it" and that's exactly how I feel about Prince's Gambit.

Captive Prince (book one) wasn’t the best book. The characters were easy and predictable, the idea of sexualising a 'country' to a bizarrely accepted level was strange to me, and the relationship between Laurent and Damen was fanatically unbelievable. Despite all this I decided to give the second book a go. Firstly, because I decided it could only get better and secondly, because I have an inherent compulsion to complete trilogies.

This was a bad decision. Of all the frailties and flaws displayed in Captive Prince, Prince's Gambit somehow manages - much to my dismay - to magnify these horrendous traits in even more detail! It begs belief how this book is so highly rated amongst those who bought it on Amazon, it truly does! This is supposed to be a story of countries embroiled in war, with political agendas put secondary to personal vendettas, and of monumental betrayals. The underlying theme (that the reader knows all along) is that Laurent's biggest enemy is his slave, surviving under his nose and in his care, and we all wait with bated breath for the 'big reveal' moment.

The relationship between Laurent and Damen was exposed as farcical in the first book with Damen 'The Slave' acting exactly as that - a slave. Take away the beginning of the book, where we are force-fed the knowledge that he is a prince and rightful heir to the thrown of Akielos, and you would never imagine (nor make the connection) that he is royalty. In this book, he is no longer ‘The Slave’ but the 'Undercover Captain' – so acutely aware of the Vere geography and so aptly adept at commanding men, yet not trusted by the men of Vere to lead them. Unless your name is Laurent. Obviously.
Suddenly Damen transforms from the untrained, dangerous slave, to the behind-the-scenes, untrusted puppet master, to the adored and beloved captain to all men everywhere. Also, he is Laurent's confidant and 'partner in crime' when they often use the dead of night to foray - sometimes for days at a time - to a distant village or settlement for secret missions. Yes, the soon-to-be-king of Vere just goes wandering with an Akielion brute without an entourage. Damen, on the other hand, is the best fighter (obviously), the imposing figure (obviously), and Prince's lover (umm...).

Bringing me onto the biggest sticking point of this entire novel. All the above; war / betrayal / politics etc., are all one hundred percent secondary to the sex in this book. It appears the author has gone out of her way to constantly steer us towards paedophilic relationships, sexual scenarios, and unnecessarily detailed acts. Laurent and Damen spend a lot of time running into vast dangers which are overlooked and down-played with perpetual mentions of Laurent's "soft skin" or "line of his neck" or "curve of his back" which ferociously undermines the fragility and/or seriousness of the situation. I genuinely cannot understand the need for this constant reference as it doesn't make sense, doesn't fit in and doesn't work in the entirety of the plotline. I would rather C.S.Pacat spent more time on character believability and plot depth rather than two Prince's love story and descriptive sexual experiences with one and other.

As aforementioned I have a strange internal obligation to finish trilogies. Unfortunately, even my inexplicable mannerism in this regard could not save this trilogy and I happily leave it here with no impulse to even pick up the third.

Gli do una stella per il fatto che secondo le politiche della casa editrice ho dovuto acquistare il libro cartaceo per leggermi i contenuti inediti che non sono stati messi nell'ebook.

Invece di incentivare gli ebooks e quindi no allo spreco della carta ... loro hanno deciso non solo di far pagare di piú (l'ebook costa meno) ma appunto di far arrivare le persone che desiderano leggere i contenuti esclusivi a comprarsi la versione cartacea.

Una stella é solo per questa cosa che davvero non ho apprezzato.

Per il resto bella trilogia, godibile si legge davvero bene, e i personaggi catturano parecchio!

So here's the thing. I love this book. I love all three in the series, and CS Pacat delights me. Do you like romance? Intrigue? Politics, uncomfortable truths, and tactics? You'll dig this book.

So why the low ranking?

Because I bought the ebook edition, which doesn't include content that the physical edition does. There's an additional short story/half of a chapter that's in the physical edition, that isn't included with the ebook. That's pretty crummy, and a clear move by the publisher to encourage customers to purchase physical over digital -- which, frankly, is beyond frustrating.

So: 5 stars for the book itself. 1 star for the publisher's bullcrap.

Do not buy this book or anything from this author - when I purchased it the blurb assured the final book to be out within a few months - now a year later they are re-releasing all three books at triple the price. We kindle users need to send a message to Amazon, publishers and authors!!

What's Up with the Single Quotes?!

I liked the first book so much that I bought this second installment without thinking. That was a mistake. Now I can't get past the fact that the author suddenly decided to ignore the basic rules of punctuation and used single quotes in place of double quotes to separate the dialogue. No matter how great a story is, I can never respect the authors that mutilate their languages.
