Prince's Gambit definitely doesn't suffer from second book syndrome. The pace quickens, the world gets some depth added to it, the characters develop more. Everything that should happen within a sequel happens.

In this book we pick up pretty much where its predecessor leaves us. With Damen and Laurent travelling South in an attempt to stop war between Vere and Akielos. What follows is a masterful display of political power play that is both intriguing and suspenseful.

The development of the characters essentially comes from the slight change in dynamic within their relationship. Damen goes from just being Laurent's slave to becoming a respected and strategic member of Laurent's army. They make up for each others weaknesses. With Damen's strength, strategy and war-worn mind and Laurent's tactical, calculating and ever-thinking mind they become a good team.

C.S. Pacat subtly places elements of back story for Laurent in small moments. It gives you a better understanding of him and makes him more likable. It was interesting to see the progression in Damen. In the first book he was forcibly taken from his home and and placed in a country and society he isn't familiar with. Understandably, he wasn't at ease. Now however, he is heading towards his home and given some form of free-reign. It was nice to see him in his element, fighting and being a strategist.

There is so much tension and hate between the two main characters and yet they still have a deep connection. It feels like a masterclass in how to write the perfect slow burn.

In all, I am pleased and surprised with Pacat. She has created an enjoyable world but given twists and betrayals that I never saw coming. The reason this book is still within the 3's is because even though I do like and enjoy them I'm not madly in love with them. They're a nice easy read and I would recommend them if this type of book is something you're into but I'm not scrambling to turn the page and practically hanging off my seat. But, I still like them.

let me first start by saying i loved book 1 of this series it lead me to want more so i got book 2 it was an ok read but for me it was lacking in some ways and in others it was boring there just was not enough in this story for me for me to continue reading to the conclusion it felt meh and i found that Larrent was the problem for me i just didn't like his character he was just so boring and arrogant basically lifeless maybe if we had his pov i may have felt differently which is sad as i really did like he main character Damen when he wasn't pining after Larrent i don't mind that some characters in there books start getting stockholm but at least most have depth and its warranted as they fall in love with each other i didn't find any in larrent and won't be reading book 3 :-)

3,0 van 5 sterren My only issue (and it is a big one) was that it needed a good editor: Penguin should be ashamed of their efforts

An engaging book by an enthusiastic writer. My only issue (and it is a big one) was that it needed a good editor: Penguin should be ashamed of their efforts. The book (and its companion volumes) is crammed with misspellings and malapropisms. The main one that springs to mind is that "accession" (gaining the throne) is absolutely without fail rendered as "ascension" (being taken up into heaven).

Given that this series is largely about two men gaining the throne, this howling error got a thorough workout. It and many others should have been picked up and corrected by any competent editor.

The story, though, was enjoyable enough to get me through all three books.

This second volume is not as good as the first book. The story is dragging on a little bit but the characters remain interesting as well as their interaction.

Ce second volume n'est pas aussi bon que le premier. L'histoire traîne un peu en longueur mais les personnages restent intéressants de même que leur interaction.

The Captive Prince Trilogy is one long story. You need to read all three books in order: Captive Prince, Prince’s Gambit, and Kings Rising. Book 1 was good. Book 2 was the best. I did not like Book 3. The ending of Book 3 was good - it was happy for the main characters. But prior to the end Book 3 was mostly frustrating feelings and a couple of stupid events. I put an example in Spoiler below. Books 1 and 2 had more interesting strategies and events. Book 3 was no fun.

The story is mostly about military, wars and politics in two countries/kingdoms. There are a lot Machiavellian strategies, conflicts and trickery. Other adjectives to describe the story: enslavement, rape, torture, sexual depravity. Gay male sex is talked about a lot. Both countries have sex slaves and other slaves.

Laurent is a 20-year-old prince soon to be made king of Vere. His uncle is the current Regent but plans to kill Laurent so he can stay in power. They are master manipulators working against each other. Laurent appears to be evil, cold and intriguing. There is a lot of mystery about him.

Damen is a prince from Akielos. Damen’s brother Kastor took over the Akielos throne and sent Damen to Vere to be a slave.

I don’t know the author’s inspirations, but I imagine the following could have been inspirations: David Bowie for Prince Laurent, his country Vere being like Italy, valuing art and beauty. Gerard Butler in the movie 300 would be Damen. His country Akielos similar to Sparta.

SEX:
Throughout the books characters talk a lot about men having sex with men, teenage boys, and male slaves. These are references to sex not detailed explicit sex scenes, but this keeps sex frequently in the reader’s mind. Most of it is male-male sex but there is one male-female sex scene.

The total number of sex scenes for all three books is about 6: 3 short scenes, 3 longer scenes, and many references to sex having happened. In one scene two men are forced to wrestle naked on stage with the winner raping the loser.

TORTURE:
There is a whipping torture scene in Book 1. A couple torture scenes are referred to in Book 3.

CAUTION SPOILER:
An example of a Book 3 stupid event: someone surrendering himself without good reason to an enemy who will kill him, then luck saves the day. The logic for this did not fit the character’s logic and abilities in the first two books.
END SPOILER.

DATA:
Narrative mode: 3rd person. Story length: about 947 pages includes all 3 books. Swearing language: strong. Sexual language: strong/explicit. Number of sex scenes: about 6. Setting: a time of swords and horses in a fictional land. Copyright: 2013, 2014, 2016. Genre: gay male fiction.

If I didn't like Damen and Laurent I'd quit. The author goes out of her way to write way over any normal person's vocabulary. Everyone is awful to each other and I can tell Laurent was the Regent's victim of pedophilia even if it's not revealed yet.

I wanted to like it so bad, since I loved the first one, but it was very underwhelming. I find it hard to keep attention and , except for very few moments, I didn't really enjoy it.

This was book two in "Captive Prince Trilogy" and I have to face it this series is not for me. This book was picked for me to read in a (PIFM). Laurent is a 20 year old prince soon to be made king of Vere. His uncle is the current Regent but plans to kill Laurent so he can stay in power. They are working against each other Laurent is evil and cold and intriguing. There is a lot of mystery about him. Damen is a prince from Akielos. Damen’s brother Kastor took over the Akielos throne and sent Damen to Vere to be a slave. The book talked about sex but I like my books with detailed sex scenes it doesn't have to be explicit all the time but some and this book didn't have it. This book was well written with no errors in grammar or spelling. I am not sure if I will read the next book.
