Continues to be surprising

This is a story I began cautiously, yet, it continues to surprise me. There are so many well done twists and turns, which keeps the reader guessing.

I was wary about the M/M romance, having never read a story like this before. Yet, I am surprised - the relationship build between Laurent and Damien is well done and really draws you in.

The reader needs to remember that this is a fantasy, so the world we enter is not like ours and that is made clear in different ways.

I like the mountain tribe that is governed, and made up of women. I had a few chuckles about a few of their practices - go girls.

Prince's Gambit ist ein gelungener Nachfolger zum ersten Teil. Der Schreibstil und die Geschichte ist auf dem gleichen Niveau wie im Ersten, keine Verbesserung oder Verschlechterung, aber wenn einem Captive Prince gefallen hat, kann man beruhigt den zweiten Teil weiterlesen. Die Geschichte wird flüssig und schnell weitererzählt, an ein paar Stellen zu schnell für meinen Geschmack, liegt aber meist am Hauptcharakter, der einfach nicht genug hinterfragt und eine sehr einfache Weltanschauung hat, an ein paar Stellen einfach zu naiv für mich. Aber im großen und ganzen, ist die Geschichte der beiden unterschiedlichen Prinzen interessant genug um sich auf den dritten Teil zu freuen.

It's the second book in the trilogy and it's one amazing series. Though I'm not normally the biggest fan, I love the historical aspect of the story. And Laurent and Damien are amazing. When people say that this story is a slow burn, they're not kidding at all. Like, nothing happens until the end of this nook. And that ending was crazy.

I liked the first volume well enough, but I still had my reservations about it, which I explained in my review of Captive Prince Book One. But this second volume is, I think, the point where the series get out of its somewhat fafic-like carcan, and goes out to develop and truly rise high.

The characters, already well fleshed out in the first book (Damen and Laurent in the lead - sorry for the pun) keep growing here, twisting, changing, and, most interesting, truly learning about each other - the respect and friendship that bloom doesn't spring from nowhere, no. It's thought-out, slow and believable - both Laurent and Damen change while staying true to their respective personalities, and the presence of elements of the first book are still here. There's no gloss-over. Well. Almost none, but I'll come back to that in a few lines.
Moreso, the intrigue stays just as important - or even more important - than the romance. What Court game and power play we had discovered at the end of the first book develops even more, with battles of wits as well as swords along the way - all believable and intelligent.

Now, about said romance - well. It's good, very good, the romance and the attraction themselves, that's it. The author takes her time and doesn't hesitate to draw it out. On the whole lenght of the book there's hints, moments that explain and insure a carefully constructed and growing pull between these two Princes. As I said, very good. Good enough that, when the sex comes, it's not, for once, a weird, pushover moment - no, it truly feels natural. To a point.
Because, and it's truly my only critical point on this second volume, I feel like, while Laurent's reactions and slight skittishness are parfectly understandable and welcome (the readers will know why), there IS a huge gloss-over over what I feel as Damen's issues, or the ones he should have - he has been tortured, subejcted to sexual attention he did not want (rest assured, not from Laurent himself), and yet he seems to stay perfectly untouched by it, and perfectly at ease with having sex anew. I found it a bit unbelievable. True, the focus of this scene was mostly on laurent (again, readers now why), but I still read in disbelief when I saw how uncaringly Damen waltzed into the touch of another, especially considering the sexual intent behind it.

But it is only a minor squabble of mine, and it doesn't change the fact that this book is truly the best part of the series, a excellent, etrribly enjoyable page-turner. Try it. Try them both, it's worth it!

Book 2 is better than book one.At the end I felt a bit lost......... is there going to be a book 3. Good story but I always was left looking for a bit more detail a bit more story.

Laurent and Damon... They are great characters and they've continued to develop in this second book, more and more details being revealed. In the first book it was very hard to remember that Laurent is just a young man of 19, but in this book, occasionally, he comes across as naive and young, most endearingly when he attempted the magic trick! I actually started to like Laurent and his twisty mind and the more that's revealed, it wouldn't surprise me if he had everything planned!

Also, I just want to address something that some reviewers are complaining about, not so much in this book, but especially the first book... Yes, there is rape and slaves in these books. However, this is not a contemporary novel and although it's a fantasy in time when this is set slaves were used, as was corporal punishment. I'm not saying it was right by our standards, but it was real and I personally don't have an issue with it in books like this. If it was a contemporary book painting in the same light, that would be a different matter... But that's just my opinion...

All in all, this book was really good. Whereas the first book seemed to set the scene and the characters, this book has more plot and action and the story is really starting to unfold, the relationship between Damen and Laurent developing into more than master and slave. Finally, that ending! Loved it! And now I'm going to dive straight into the last book.
