Preventing mouldy shelves!

I bought two of these units for my garage and I was concerned about the 1 star reviews complaining about mouldy mdf shelves. Before I assembled the shelves I painted the boards with mdf primer (£20) and gloss paint that I had in the house. It was a bit of work, I spent most of day painting and leaving them to dry, but I think it’ll be worth it as every shelving unit seems to use mdf boards. Units themselves were easy to assemble and are good quality. I assembled both in an hour with my 6 year old son used to hold pieces upright, etc. I used a rubber mallet to lodge pieces together. Happy to give 5 star review. If you are planning to use in a shed or garage I would def paint them 1st to avoid mould.

The MDF shelves are prone to going extremely mouldy, extremely quickly in any cellar!

I loved these shelves when I put them up - a great size, shape, easy to assemble and sturdy however within 4 months they were caked in mould.

Yes they are in my cellar but my argument is my cellar is not damp, their description states the shelves are moisture resistant anyway and people are only even going to use the shelves in a cellar, garage, loft or shed and the average person would assume when buying these "moisture resistant" shelves that they are suitable for a cellar.

I must highlight I recently moved and had a survey in which there was no mention of damp whatsoever. I store lots of wood down there and the shelves are the only thing to go mouldy!

I therefore requested a refund and the seller wrote:
******our terms and conditions state that we aren't liable for damage to the boards from mould (please see item 19.1 of our TS & Cs on our website) as mould growth is an environmental condition.....Our shelves are water-resistant, but not waterproof, therefore when they're kept in an area of high humidity or damp, they can develop mould. Another reason for this may be the area has poor ventilation and high condensation. It's possible to disinfect and clean the boards, alternatively, we can supply new boars at a cost of £2.50 per board + £6.00 delivery, and we'd recommend treating the boards with an oil-based wood finish product to protect them from moisture.

If you wish to return them, we'd need the items to be boxed up and we'd need to pass on our courier charge of £11.00 per box to collect, you can also arrange you your own shipping if that's easier for you.********

I argued that it states in three places on the description that their shelves are moisture resistant, that my cellar is not a high condensation area and so I deem the description to be in breach of Section 10 and Section 11.1 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 as they don't match their description and they're not fit for purpose and they said:

******our shelving is water-resistant but not waterproof. This means that they are able to resist the penetration of water to an extent, however not entirely and certainly not if used in conditions that are high damp, humidity or if they have been in contact with wet/damp objects regularly. This is something that is present in all MDF, and why we recommend varnishing etc when using in these conditions. We have found that our shelving does not go mouldy when used in the correct conditions, in which there is ventilation, and no exposure to regular damp, wetness, or humidity. This is something that we have explained to others who have had this problem.******

Note the sentence "This is something present in all MDF".

Make of it what you will - maybe the company genuinely do not realise how prone they are to going mouldy, but at the end of the day I would have not have had an issue if after a year there were a few patches of mould which needed scrubbing off but to have it hanging off like blooming icicles and having to scrub clean all my belongings a few months in is RIDICULOUS!

Moving forward the company really need to improve the design or change the description on their website and should investigate any claims customers have made rather than just wrongly assume they have stored them in very humid conditions.

Very difficult to assemble

I WOULD NOT BUY AGAIN. The assembly system is a good idea, IN THEORY. In reality it relies on small metal tabs fitting through a preformed metal band, then exiting the band to make a secure connection. This worked for about 20% of the connections, for the remaining the bands had to be physically stretched and widened with a screw driver. It took two people at every juncture, one person standing in front and one behind to make sure the connection had been properly made and the metal tab had gone into the band. It took ages to assemble. Also the photos on the instruction sheet were useless as so dark. I have two remaining bits of metal which I assume are wall fixings but no instructions as to how they work, it’s not obvious.

The shelf material goes mouldy. I've had set in a loft and others in a shed. None have got wet, all have gone mouldy. Really mouldy and really quickly. So I've had get boards cut to replace all of those on the shelves I purchased. Will definitely not buy again.

Original review:
Relatively easy to assemble, ideally with a helper to hold parts, but can be done alone with patience and a wall to lean things against. I used a normal hammer struck against a short piece of 2x2 to knock the shelf supports into place.

Seems flimsy at first but once assembled and properly loaded it is actually pretty sturdy and will stand freely, particularly if you've got the top and bottom shelves positioned at the extremes on the supports. Even so, if this is going to be a tempting climbing frame for children I'd strongly recommend screwing it to a wall. There are screw holes in the uprights.

The finish is reasonable, I purchased the galvanised version, so can't comment on the painted offerings and there's a slight smell from the MDF shelves, but nothing particularly strong or offensive IMO.

I was sufficiently happy to order two more sets.

The insturctions that came with it can be a little confusing but once you figure out what goes where, its fairly easy. Im a 5'4" woman and i assembled it all to myself. That goes to show that it can be done. Very sturdy and the color goes very well in my kitchen

Sometimes I wonder who writes these damn reviews on Amazon but this with its near 5-star rating, takes the biscuit. What are people using it for?

I bought this on the count of it being the same as something available from Aldi that took longer to arrive from there than Amazon. As soon as I opened the packet, I was met by the almighty guff of cheap MDF. But whatever... I put this together in about 15 minutes so it was easy to set up [true]. No mallets necessary as the metal slotted into the respective slots with ease - this is where the first problem arises. Strength. Rigidity. Sturdiness. None of which exist.

I stacked it in 5 and then I stacked it in a 3+2. Both options were dangerous - this was going to be used for timber in my workshop (reasonably heavy) and after I set it up, shook it a bit to test it, I just stood back and thought, "no chance". The metal is so useless in this, any reasonable weight will bend it and its simply not fit for purpose. I'm tempted to say its not even steel. As I say, I have no idea what people are using these shelves for to give them such high reviews but for me, they're garbage that warrants an instant return.

Get what you pay for I suppose.

I needed to get organised and tidy up a few things, and this shelving unit came up in my searches. The good reviews and free Prime delivery made the decision for me.

I’m glad I went for it. I have the unit on a thin carpeted floor, as a shelving unit for printers (A3 printers plus a heavy laser). The unit is sturdier than I expected. At first I wasn’t convinced by the wooden shelves, but the beam tie supporting it does the job.

I was able to assemble it myself in a relatively small space. I assembled the side frames first, and then attached the bottom and top frames. Once it was standing on its own, I then added the other frames by standing inside the structure before putting the wooden shelves in place.

It would be easier to assemble with two people - at least before getting the structure standing - but it’s not too difficult to do it on your own.

The finished result is reassuringly stable. I’m impressed enough that I’m ordering a slightly larger one in now.

It took an hour and 20 mins to make alone, and I'm pretty flat pack etc skilled after making mine, mum's and grandparents stuff.

Tip: build it exactly where you need it because moving it, even a tiny bit, makes it separate in half each time where the two longer parts for the height are.

Allegedly they're meant to be a tight fit and knocked in with a mallet to make them fit. In reality they part each time you even slightly have to move it and trap your finger every time. This continues to happen when it's complete and the shelves are all on. If you only come away with only one blood wheel from being nicked by it you've done incredibly well.

One shelf broke slightly at the corner from just being out into the shelves.

It is not as rigid and sturdy as it says. Even when gently tapped by mallets the tabs do not slip right down onto the holes to fit in completely.

If I didn't have an urgent need for it and I could drive to drop it off at the post office (it is very heavy in the box, not far off 20kg) I would have returned.

My honest opinion is to go for the amazon basics 5 shelf system that clicks together. It's more expensive but it's sturdy, it can be put up in a third of the time this took even alone and I'm not scared that it would collapse without warning. It also doesn't come apart easily when moved (if anything it just doesn't come apart haha).
