Interesting book, but the Kindle version is disappointing.

The book is very interesting and compiles lots of research on all kinds of child rearing questions.
I would give a high rating, but the Kindle version is lacking all graphs and lists. The text frequently refers to the graphs, which makes for a very frustrating read!

Boring. Superficial. Data driven? I dont think so.
Why does a self declared neurotic person write a book of recommendations for parents?

I stopped reading after the author stated that the old fashioned behaviouristic "sticks and carrots" would not harm the toddlers. This is simply wrong. Not even a fact - so much for data driven.
Better read Jesper Juul on modern parenting, his philosophy is based on respect and love.
Regarding circumcision... no mention of the simple fact that cutting off body parts from people usually causes pain. Why harm a baby in such a way!?!?!?

Interesting read- pg 198-231 are literally missing!

I bought this book as a previous book written by this same author was recommended by Amy Schumer. We are just working our way through it to discover that a complete section of the book is missing! Literally pg 198-231 does not exist in our copy. Alas, our return period has ended. Please check your copies when you can still return them!!

Otherwise, a decent read & interesting perspective on parenting. Although interesting, I would not treat this book as the bible on parenting as it does not look critically at some of the studies used, notably the section on breastfeeding. Breastfeeding is notoriously hard to study!!

Do not buy this book! An economists wants to tell you what is/isn’t okay as a parent? Follow your instincts and do what’s natural to you. Please don’t leave your babies to cry and breastmilk is what is perfectly made for babies and their developing guts. Research can be very flawed and tweaked to get desired results. Please just love on the babies and forget about this rubbish!

I was beginning to enjoy the advice in this book until it got to the chapter of Vaccines. I’m not an anti vaxxer, but very aware of the side effects (including death) about them. I cringe anytime someone says that they are safe for everyone, because it’s not true, and it’s a punch in the guts to any parent who has a vaccine injury child or died due to vaccine injury. No mention of VAERS or the money paid out to these parents. Or how many cases don’t get reported because parents don’t know about it. So to then say a blanket statement of they are “safe and effective”, and not bring up any warnings...I now wonder what else in this book is one sided and doesn’t tell the whole story. Give both sides and let parents make the choice.

Opinion based, no enough hard data

As someone who works in the medical field and has done significant research herself about some of the topics in this book - I should have known better. This book, while well-worded is just an opinion piece and the authors attempt to justify her own parenting decisions.
The arguments basically saying breastmilk and formula are equal ignore some significant data. Other topics that aren’t well enough researched in this book include vitamin d supplementation during breastfeeding (the author limits this study to only rickets even though vit d plays a large part in brain development), baby led weaning (the author claims that it is the “lazy” parent approach and has no factual benefits, while saying baby led weaning babies have higher risk for choking which has been debunked by many studies)
I could go on.
Disappointed in this book, do your own research.

I enjoyed her previous book, Expecting Better, the studies/science seemed solid and helpful (even though I didn’t take many of her recommendations, like drinking). So, naturally I bought this book. It is a painful read.

There isn’t enough data for nearly everything she talks about, then she basically writes it off as “because there is not enough data, then whatever you do is ok”. She is completely out of her scope.

I can’t stand the way the author takes jabs at her husband throughout and her kids might as well be nothing more then little data points. I noticed this in the first book, but it’s just too much this time… especially in the context of talking about newborn babies. Where’s the love?

As a second time mom, the book made me a bit sad to read. She pretty much strips away any excitement about motherhood. She also doesn’t stay neutral, I felt some chapters were most definitely defensively geared towards supporting the decisions she made for her kids. Overall, such a disappointment.

I never post reviews, but this one forced my hand. This book advertises itself as data driven and non opinionated, but rather, the author picks one side of a topic and pushes all evidence toward that opinion. There are no pros and cons. It’s entirely pros of which option she thinks is right. If you only want one side of every argument rather than making evidence based decisions in which you can weigh the pros and cons for yourself and your family then maybe this book is for you. I would rather be given ALL the information in an unbiased way so I can make my own decision.
