A contrarian, exciting theory of how the brain works

The first thing to say: the book is about a new theory of how the brain works from a neuroscientific perspective, but it's written (on purpose) in such an accessible language that anyone can enjoy it.

The second and equally important thing to say: the book is divided into three parts. The first one is dedicated to the theory, the second one is dedicated to the future of AI, and the third part is dedicated to the possible future of humankind.

You only need to read the first part to understand the theory and, if you think it's worth exploring more, you can augment that with the more complex, academic papers listed in the Recommended Reading section at the end of the book.
This part of the book is the one I'd recommend to anybody interested in the latest progress in neuroscience. Contrarian data scientists and machine learning engineers interested in designing AI should read the book, too.

My rating is focused on this first part of the book only. It's a 4/5 because I'd have preferred Hawkins dedicating more time to the more technical details (maybe in an optional appendix) rather than digressing in the way he did with parts two and three.

It's also worth saying that the theory is incomplete and, even after reading the research papers that support it, you might still have many unanswered questions. That doesn't mean that the idea is not valuable and thought-provoking. Just that it needs more time to be fully confirmed experimentally and further expanded where it still lacks clarity.

The second part is only partially related to the theory of the Thousand Brains. I'm afraid I have to disagree with some assumptions related to the risks of truly intelligent machines. Hawkins can envision very complex scenarios about the inner workings of the brain. Still, he doesn't want to contemplate more straightforward scenarios where, for example, interconnected intelligent machines learn about human discoveries in real-time and, in practicality, learn faster than humans about how the implications of those discoveries and adopted them more quickly than us.

Overall, I don't think it's worth focusing too much on this section, and nobody should use it as a lens to judge the theory itself. My rating completely ignores it.

The third part of the book is almost entirely unrelated to the theory of the Thousand Brains. It contains many interesting, occasionally controversial, perspectives and ideas about how our species could evolve and what should be our purpose in the future. However, that content (together with part two or by itself) could be better suited in a dedicated book.
I understand Hawkins' desire to share his views on the topics he touches and use the book to call for action. But, as it is, it's more a distraction from the theory than anything else.

Just like for part two, my rating completely ignores this content.

Overall, this is a must-read book if you are interested in novel ideas about how the brain works and what intelligence is all about. However, I recommend focusing on part one, then continue by reading the research papers, and only after, as a sort of unrelated bonus, read parts two and three.

Framework for intelligence and cortical computation

This book can be considered a continuation of the previous book : On Intelligence - 2004.
Obviously a lot happened since then. Hawkins founded Numenta in 2005.
Hawkins proposed The Thousand Brains Theory of Intelligence in 2018 - it is a a new framework for intelligence and cortical computation. Since then he was working tirelesly to put that concept in a book, it took him 18 months to write it. This book contains result of 15 years of research that was done by Jeff with his Numenta team since his previous book. He believes the current deep learning technology will not be able to create intelligent machines. On the ther hand he thinks his theory is the right path to that goal. I find him very convincing. I think this book is going to be very influential in the AI community in this decade and even longer.

No matter how much I thought I knew about the brain, as a medical doctor I learnt the anatomy of the brain, I am mesmerised with this book. It has opened a door that I did not out existed. Incredibly fascinating and full of knowledge. Very highly recommended

As an actual PhD in Neuroscience, I found this book insulting

I couldn't get through this book, as an actual neuroscientist, I couldn't bear it. Jeff Hawkins is not a neuroscientist. He's not even a scientist. He's an engineer and like most engineers, his hubris leads him to believe he knows more than he actually does. Neuroscience (or just science in general) is not a hobby. We don't pull facts from thin air and call it theory. There is a process and methods we follow, none of which this author seems to follow. His book is rife with confirmation bias (he talks about papers that he 'believes' confirm his theory because they talk about similar concepts..). He also talks about his "peer-reviewed" papers, all of which were published in Frontiers, a journal that, as every scientist knows, has the lowest publication bar in any field and where whenever a reviewer rejects a paper, they get replaced by another more favorable one... Finally, presenting a theoretical framework (his work is too under-specific to be called a model) as fact is a dead giveaway that he is not a scientist.

For those interested in neuroscience, you can read Michio Kaku's book, Future of the Mind. Dr. Kaku, despite being a PhD. in theoretical physics and one of the pioneers of string theory, interviewed many of the top neuroscientists in the world to write his book. If you are interested in the integration of neuroscience and machine learning, you can watch Dr. Yoshua Bengio's lectures to the public on this topic. Dr. Bengio is one of the 2018 Turing award recipients and is leading cutting edge AI research that leverages knowledge from cognitive neuroscience.

Water damage from Amazon EU S.a.r.L

The book was sold as new from Amazon EU S.a.r.L and arrived with pristine packaging but very clear evidence of water damage. Pages not stuck together, still readable but pages throughut book cockled and some light mould growth within the front cover. Clearly it was dried prior to posting and the damage must have been evident to the person (if there was one) that filled the package prior to posting. Its the first time that I have ever had a damaged product from Amazon. Im not going to retun it because life is too short to walk all the way back to the post office. I will keep the book but it is not woth the purchase price and I am very dissapointed.

I found the theory expounded upon in this book so interesting and exciting. I can't stop thinking about cortical columns and how they work, as well as how a person thinks things through, how prediction is so central to cognition and the notion of voting. Hawkins' opinions on AI were very interesting and enhanced the neuroscience that preceded it. The rest of the book felt distracting. I think Jeff Hawkins would have done well to put this into a sequel, as it covered very different - if associated ground to the first part of the book.

The section that Mr. Hawkins writes on whether or not artificial intelligence would be dangerous contained many ideas that I had never encountered before. The book is worth reading for those ideas alone. The ideas that he puts forward regarding how the brain works are still only theoretical in my opinion. However, it was VERY interesting.

Ein Autor, der sein Leben der Gehirnforschung verschrieben hat, stellt die aus seiner Sicht aktuellsten Ergebnisse zum Verständnis des Neocortex, also des Teils im menschlichen Gehirn, dar wesentlich für Intelligenz verantwortlich ist, dar. Im Buch erklärt er auch für Menschen ohne Vorwissen seinen Ansatz, der stark reduziert besagt, daß unser Gehirn Modelle der Realität erzeugt und Dinge tausendfach ablegt. Mit Hilfe von abstrakten Referenzrahmen wird zwischen Gestalt und Ort von Dingen unterscheiden. Mit seiner Theorie kann er viele Aspekte, wie z.B. abstraktes Denken aber auch unser Bewusstsein erklären und bietet auch konkrete Nachweise aus der Forschung seines Unternehmens, die seine Theorie stützen.
Im hinteren Teil des Buches zeigt er auf wie diese Erkenntnisse genutzt werden können, um daraus eine deutlich bessere künstliche Intelligenz zu schaffen, mit deren Hilfe er z.B. die Besiedlung von Planeten ermöglichen möchte. Weiter gedacht will er den Beweis unserer menschlichen Intelligenz für andere Intelligenzen im Universum über die Existenz unserer Erde hinaus festhalten.

Der Teil seiner "biologischen" Forschung liest sich anschaulich und zeigt verständlich die Grundlagen seiner Theorie auf. Leider sind aber gewisse Bereiche noch nicht wissenschaftlich bewiesen, was er auch offen darstellt. Gewisse Bereiche sind aber aus meiner Sicht nur sehr dünn erklärt. So wird nur recht kurz darauf eingegangen, wie der Neocortex aus seiner Vielzahl an Gehirnen eine eindeutige Realität ableitet. Darüber hinaus werden aus meiner Sicht aber viele Aspekte überhaupt nicht adressiert wie z.B. das Thema des Träumens, das mit Sicherheit eine große Bedeutung für unser Gehirn hat. Entsprechend ist der "biologische" Teil seines Buch mehr ein Zwischenstand und bietet noch viel Platz für weitere Erkenntnisse.
Allerdings ist auch der "gesellschaftliche" oder visionäre Teil des Buches in weiten Teilen naiv. Der Author kann nicht verleugnen, daß er das Vermögen für seine Forschung im Silicon Valley mit dem Vorläufer des Smartphones erarbeitet hat. Er ist geprägt von einer hohen Technikaffinität und einer teilweise naiven Sicht auf den Einfluß von Technik auf komplexe gesellschaftliche Themen. Z.B. ist in seiner Sicht Intelligenz erst mal gut (nicht neutral), nur die triebhaften "alten" Teile unseres Gehirns sorgen für negative Ausprägungen und egoistisches Verhalten.
Auch wenn verschiedene interessante Aspekte aufgeworfen werden, wirken die Anregungen und Visionen die er aufzeigt, ähnlich wie der vordere Teil zur Forschung, noch nicht zu Ende gedacht.

Trotz der Kritik regt das Buch zum Nachdenken an und Jeff Hawkins vermittelt sein Engagement für das Thema in einer Form, die nicht nur Gehirnforscher verstehen. Für ein umfassendes Verständnis ist aber noch viel Forschung, für die der Author auch wirbt, notwendig.

Very boring prose and nothing like Jeff's "On intelligence". He is definitely making tremendous progress in the field. However, the inability to construct a clear framework or atleast a proper foundation is evident. Reading his first book kept me thrilled from the first page to the last. This book is putting me to sleep every ten pages ! Jeff is a pioneer in this field and if he cannot elucidate a proper theory, then, i guess that we are way too far from truly intelligent machines.
