I have a thousand things to say about this book, but to summarise it sweetly this book is a hot, beautiful, emotion filled book! I fell endlessly in love with Zaxh and Eugenio’s relationship and I adored the side characters - I’D FREAKING LOVE A SPIN OFF BOOK DOR LYDIA AND MORGAN!!

Zack was a sook and you would think he was 15 not an adult. Oh and then he tells his parents after leading E on for yours and they are like cool as long as you are happy. Was not worth the read. But thats my view other think its great.

This book came highly recommended by one of my favorite authors.
I've never read anything by KD Casey, so I figured I'd give it a try.
I was a little disappointed by the fact that I couldn't connect with either one of these characters.
I thought that the absence of any type of emotion was what turned me off. And I have a hard time with books written in the 3rd person, so maybe that was it?
I just found this to be more about baseball than a gay man afraid to come out.
My expectations were pretty high, considering the subject matter, but this story just fell flat for me.
I almost didn't finish, but I struggled to the end, hoping there would be some sparks, some anger, some happiness, sadness, ANYTHING from either Zach or Eugenio, but there was none of that.
Sorry to say I felt this book was a huge disappointment for me.

Holy moly I loved it! I’m not a baseball fan. In fact, my spouse has banned me from going to games at Fenway because tickets are too damn expensive for me to get bored and pull out my Kindle.

Still, I loved this story. And I found the baseball setting compelling because it was more than mere backdrop. As I read, I went down many rabbit holes about what pitch framing is, how bullpen norms have changed over time, why catchers are likely to become coaches, and unionizing the minors. To be clear—you absolutely don’t have to have any idea what pitch framing is to appreciate the hotttttt teaching-tricky-professional-skill-as-reason-for-MCs-to-touch-each-other sequence. It’s just that these characters and setting are so vividly realized that my longtime aversion to watching baseball was reset. I became curious again.

What will stay with me the longest is the yearning tone, from the perspective of Zach, the main character, who feels deeply, but fundamentally doesn’t believe he can have love and intimacy while playing baseball. Whereas Eugenio continually offers a refrain of gentle affirmation: Yes, it’s okay to say we’re together because we are together. Yes, it’s okay to hope for more because I want more. At the same time, by a certain point Eugenio’s needs aren’t being met, so the arc of the second chance romance narrative is about Zach doing the work of moving toward being in right relationship. This is a book about what we owe our romantic and sexual partners, our family members, our friends, and our employers, and what they owe us — the webs of mutual obligation that shape our communities.

When I finished, I cried. I texted like 5 people to be like “read this now; I’ll wait.” I immediately turned back to the beginning and began reading over again. And I bought tickets to see our minor league affiliate play.

I loved this book so much. The author is clearly very knowledgeable about baseball, and those scenes are perfect. You feel like you're in the ballpark with them (and who knew pitch-framing could be so hot?).

Zach is a great character - he comes across as a tad unemotional and detached, but it's so clear from the writing that this is largely a defense mechanism and that he doesn't have an accurate view of himself. He has many friends and people who love him, but he has been hiding a part of himself for so long that he doesn't quite see how much people love him. I'd die for him (as would a lot of people in this book).

Eugenio is great too. He's my favorite kind of player - a little flashy, maybe a little cocky, but he's GOOD at what he does, so why not have a little fun with it? He's so gone for Zach basically the second they meet (not that Zach notices). I also loved that Eugenio set boundaries with Zach. They were in different places for a while, and even though Eugenio clearly loved Zach so much, he was also firm in what he needed without putting the onus on Zach or making him feel bad for it.

I'm not Jewish myself, so I can't speak to that representation in this book, but I really enjoyed the weaving of Zach's heritage into the story. The book also does a great job of making these characters seem like they live in real places - Zach's favorite restaurant in Miami is Dominican, for example, and the peripheral characters are all well-formed with diverse identities (like people have in real life!). I also laughed every time the Oakland Coliseum was described. I'm from SoCal so I've only been to the Coliseum once, but it was definitely accurate.

I really loved this book and zach and eugenio. The book goes back and forth in time-- I generally love the part where the characters meet and begin to fall for each other-- its what hooks you, so it took me a minute to care about what was going on in the present-- but it gets GOOD. Zach and Eugenio scenes were super erotic and passionate, but also felt fresh (from someone who reads a lot of these kind of books) and character/situation driven. Ultimately, the book is about Zach and what falling for Eugenio forces him to confront about himself and what he wants. I will say i did miss hearing from Eugenio's perspective because he was so compelling-- I'd like a better sense of both how he sees Zach and how he chooses to embrace the flashier parts of himself. I also loved all of the baseball stuff and went down some googling rabbit holes like some other readers mentioned. The side characters were great too: Morgan and Zach's sister, as well as the other baseball players Zach from friendships with. I also love that the book addresses inequality (pay disparity/working conditions/women in baseball) in a way that felt both authentic, but not preachy as Zach grew into addressing them in his own way. Ultimately the author built a really rich and compelling world, and while she left me wanting more I also felt like i got what i needed (and feel is increasingly harder to find the more i read ) from my favorite romance books-- a beautifully rendered aching desire for and connection with someone that builds throughout in a way that isn't overwrought or gratuitous, but intimate and particular to the characters. Will definitely read more from this author!

As a queer die hard baseball fan this book feels like it was written specially for me. with everything from the incredible details about playing the game and clubhouse dynamics to the terror that can come with coming out even when you know it’s what’s best for you. I laughed and I cried and I couldn’t put it down. I will be recommending this to all my friends. Loved it 10/10

I loooooooove this book. The prose is superb, the characters are so real and flawed and lovable and relatable, you want them together, and it takes the best tropes and both upholds the promise of them and subverts them. Do not sleep on this book!
